For delicious homegrown plums, look no further than the beginner, and wildlife-friendly ‘Blue Tit’. This partially self-fertile variety produces reliable, bountiful crops of vibrant purple-blue fruit with classic plum flavour. Starting light green, the plums ripen to an eye-catching hue, developing pleasant sweetness balanced with just enough tartness in the skin for cooking. The late blossoms resist lingering spring frosts, setting reliable harvests from mid-August. Supplied grafted to the reliable and semi-vigorous St Julien A rootstock.
Garden care:
Pollination Information: Though partially self-fertile, this plum will produce a bigger crop if planted with another variety of plum. Ideally this should come from the same pollination group 4, however it is possible to use one from group 3 as well.
When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Stone fruits like the plums should be pruned in the summer because they are prone to a disease called silver leaf which enters through cuts. If you prune in late summer, the sap is slowing but is still running fast enough to seal up any wounds. Check and remove any damaged, diseased or broken branches.
